Pilot perishes in NSW light plane crash

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate a plane crash in northern NSW. (AAP)

A man has died in a light plane crash in northern NSW.

The aircraft plummeted to the ground and burst into flames on a farm in Moomin Road at Rowena, about 140km west of Moree, just before midday on Saturday.

Police say neighbours tried to help the pilot prior to the arrival of emergency services but he died at the scene.

Rural Fire Service officers extinguished the blaze but the plane was already destroyed.

The pilot is yet to be formally identified.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
