Pilot named in search for missing aircraft off Welsh coast - latest updates

A pilot missing in the search for a light aircraft which disappeared off the Welsh coast has been named as Professor David Last, 79.

On Monday a rescue operation was launched after there were reports of a plane disappearing from radar contact after leaving Caernarfon Airport.

Police were called at lunchtime to what they described as a "possible crash involving a light aircraft" in the Penmon area on the south-east tip of Anglesey .

The search has been taking place near Puffin Island.

On Tuesday North Wales Police confirmed officers were continuing to assist colleagues from HM Coastguard in the search.

Due to adverse weather conditions in the area HM Coastguard confirmed that all search activities had been suspended for the day shortly before 4pm.

The RNLI have confirmed they are assisting in the search for an aircraft last see two miles north east of Penmon. A spokesman said they were coordinating a search and rescue operation following a report "that an aircraft had disappeared from radar contact".
