Pilot dies in hospital after glider crash in Monmouthshire

A pilot has died in hospital days after a glider crash in south Wales.

Steve Evans suffered serious injuries in the crash at the South Wales Gliding Club in Gwernesney, near Usk, on July 27.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene after receiving reports of the incident at about 12.45pm.

South Wales Fire Service said the glider flipped over on take off.

The 54-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries that were thought to be serious but not life threatening.

Gwent Coroner's Office confirmed Mr Evans, from Glynneath area in Neath Port Talbot, died on  August 1, at the the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesman said: "The AAIB sent inspectors to Monmouthshire following an accident involving a glider on 27 July.

"Sadly, the occupant later died. Our investigation is ongoing."

An inquest into Mr Evans' death was opened and adjourned at Newport Coroner's Court on Tuesday.

The hearing was adjourned for a date to be set.
