Pilot and 13-year-old son die tragically in plane accident off Majorca coast

A pilot and his 13-year-old son died in a plane crash while performing stunts for tourists off the coast of Majorca.

The man and his son, who have not yet been named, crashed into the sea on Saturday night off the Spanish island of Majorca in the Puerto Soller area.

The biplane, a two-seater Team Rocket F-4 Rader, crashed at around 8.20pm on Saturday night, after which an initial search by emergency teams was launched.

When this failed to locate the father and son, the search was resumed at first light on Sunday and their bodies were found.

According to Reuters, the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement: “At approximately 1pm (1100 GMT) specialist divers from the Civil Guard recovered the lifeless bodies of the pilot and his son who accompanied him in a sea which reaches a depth of 30 metres and they have been transferred to the Puerto of Soller.”

The pilot is believed to be 60-years-old and was described locally as an ex-combat pilot with “extensive experience” in flying F-18 and F-14 fighter jets operating from US Navy aircraft carriers, according to the Mirror.

A resident who was near the sea with his family and witnessed the tragic incident. He said he saw the plane flying very low and it passed about 15 to 20 metres above the group before crashing into the water and sinking, reported the Mirror.

An investigation into the crash will be launched by the police.

The Spanish Civil Guard have been contacted by the Standard for comment.
