Piles of empty beer bottles and half eaten BBQ food left behind at Formby beach

Hundreds of people flocked to Formby Beach over the bank holiday weekend to make the most of the warm weather.

But not everyone took their rubbish home with them, as piles of litter, beer bottles and disposable BBQs were left strewn across the sand.

The beauty spot was a popular choice for families over the weekend as visitors were seen queuing up early on Monday morning to get into the car park.

Long tailbacks could also be seen extending along Shore Road and the Coastal Road, with some cars forced to turn around after being told the car park was full.

People appeared to be enjoying picnics and drinks in the sunshine as temperatures soared up to 22 degrees.

However, bins on the beach were soon left overflowing with empty bottles and food containers as they reached their capacity.

Photos taken by the ECHO this morning showed the effort made by some groups to clean up after themselves by bagging up their rubbish and leaving it beside the bins.

A 48 hour dispersal zone was put in place by Merseyside Police in the region surrounding Formby beach on Monday, after a stabbing left three people in hospital.

The order came into force at 4pm on Monday and will run until 4pm on Wednesday, June 2.
