Pile-up sparks Melbourne traffic chaos

A multi-vehicle crash on the West Gate Freeway has left three people in hospital and traffic delays. (AAP)

Three people have been taken to hospital following a multi-vehicle collision that shut down outbound lanes of a major Melbourne freeway.

Police say six vehicles were involved in the crash on the West Gate Freeway, near the Montague Street off-ramp, about 11am on Tuesday.

Two women and one man were taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

One woman, in her 60s, is in a stable condition with upper body injures after briefly being trapped.

The other woman, in her 50s, and the man, in his 20s, are also in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

Lanes had reopened on the West Gate Freeway after the collision, Transport Victoria said.

Delays remain on the Monash Freeway and surrounding roads, with engineers to continue monitoring conditions and adjust traffic signals where appropriate.

Maintenance works continue on the West Gate Bridge, with three of five outbound lanes closed.

Motorists are advised to allow an additional 60 minutes travel time.

Victoria Police said no charges had yet been laid.
