Pile of fridge freezers dumped on Swansea Valley mountain

A pile of fridge freezers have been dumped on a beautiful Swansea Valley Mountain.

Five or six fridges were left on Gwrhyd Mountain, Pontardawe , overnight between Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23.

Amanda Jones, 57, lives nearby and saw the fridges. She said fly-tipping had become an increasing issue in recent months.

"I was just driving past that morning at about 8.15am, I saw it and thought 'not again'," she said.

"There is often stuff being dumped on the mountain - there was carpet dumped there recently."

She claimed fly-tipping had become a common problem in the area since the Pwllfawatkin recycling centre closed in March, 2019.

Ms Jones said she reported the fly-tipping online to Neath Port Talbot Council the day she found it, but it was still there a day later.

She added: "It is annoying and because of all the animals as well. There are also glass bottles scattered left from people who just throw their rubbish everywhere.

"It is such a pretty area and we are so fortunate to live in Wales, but some people do not appreciate it."

A spokesman for Neath Port Talbot Council said: “Although there have been changes to the arrangements for household waste and recycling in the Upper Swansea Valley, the arrangements for commercial waste remain unchanged with the landfill facility at Pwllfawatkin still in operation”.

“We acknowledge that the switch to using the centre at Lower Cwmtwrch now involves a longer journey for some residents, however for many others it has reduced the journey and in all cases it provides access to a larger site with much better service provision”.

“There can be no excuses made for fly-tipping and as such Neath Port Talbot Council takes a zero-tolerance approach to the issue. We are proud of our consistently strong enforcement record, particularly in securing successful prosecutions - for which we have been the top authority in Wales for a number of years – and welcome the support of residents and partner agencies in helping to maintain this position.”
