PHATTHALUNG - Sixteen pigs were killed and many others hurt when a six-wheel truck taking them to a slaughterhouse overturned in Muang district on Tuesday morning.
Pigs were still squealing with pain when police and rescue workers arrived at the scene on Chaiburi Road in tambon Prang Moo shortly after 7am. Some of the animals had been thrown from the truck and others were trapped in the vehicle, which had overturned near a bridge.
Some of the pigs were hit by vehicles following closely behind the truck, Thai media reported.
Truck driver Pornpipat Muenphanol and a woman passenger were found hurt and trapped in the vehicle cabin. They were extracted and taken to a nearby hospital, said Pol Capt Chaturong Chukhong, a deputy investigation chief at Muang police station.
He said Mr Pornpipat was driving one of six trucks each carrying 67 pigs from a farm in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Na Bon district to the Betagro Co abattoir in tambon Khuan Maphrao of Phatthalung province.
Police were investigating.
