PIF told Inter Milan investment would pose 'challenge' for Newcastle owners

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has admitted he's "perplexed" by PIF's interest in Serie A club Inter Milan.

The Saudi led group took over at Newcastle before the turn of the year and fans were overwhelmed to see the back of Mike Ashley,

However Maguire believes that investment into another European club would create "an awkward situation."

It's not completely unheard of to see multi-club operations across the continent, you need just look at the recent successes of RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg, but that's not without it's own challenges.

PIF have not hidden their desire to invest into a number of football clubs across the world, with Newcastle their latest purchase.

The takeover propelled the Magpies to the forefront of football finances but investment into another club, could potentially see attention diverted elsewhere.

Maguire believes the potential investment into Inter Milan would be "challenging" for PIF and create "a lot of scepticism."

I am slightly perplexed by this," Maguire told Football Insider.

“What we have seen in multi-club operations is that there is always something of a mothership.

“For City Football Group, that’s Man City. As far as Tony Bloom is concerned, that’s Brighton. For Brentford’s owners, it’s Brentford.

“The logic behind multi-club operations is that it helps to de-risk things, but things do tend to be focused on one of those clubs.

“For PIF to own a club like Inter, there has to be a priority. I think that would be quite challenging for them.

“You have that awkward situation where if money is spent on both of those clubs, they could meet in European competitions.

“We have seen Red Bull clubs circumvent the rules, but there would be a lot of scepticism if they did face each other in senior European competition.

“But it’s a nice problem to have because you’ve got to get there first.”
