Piers Morgan was axed from previous TV hosting job before shock GMB departure

Piers Morgan has quit his role on Good Morning Britain but it's not the first time a hosting gig has ended in dramatic fashion for the TV personality.

The controversial host, 55, who will depart from the ITV daytime show with 'immediate effect', previously fronted Piers Morgan Live on American news channel CNN, with the network deciding to pull the plug on his show after just three  years in 2014.

At the time Piers' departure was blamed on low ratings and sources claiming his outspoken style of presenting failed to connect with an American primetime audience

Piers took over from US broadcasting veteran Larry King for his own show, but CNN president Jeff Zucker announced it 'was time for the show to end'.

Piers told the New York Times after his exit: "It's been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings, which first broke news of the CNN decision on Sunday.

"Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it."

He added: "That's run its course and Jeff and I have been talking for some time about different ways of using me."

He will no longer be on the the daytime show (ITV)

ITV announced this evening Piers will be stepping down from his presenting job, which he fronts alongside co-star Susanna Reid, on Tuesday.

A statement read: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

He has been a presenter on the show since 2015, but he is set to put the role behind him.

The TV star has a history of controversial moments, with this now adding to the list as one of them.
