'Piers Morgan was my boss - he's impossible and has killer instincts but can go too far'

Piers Morgan is the cocky, sometimes brutal face of journalism.

I should know. I saw it often enough when he was my boss at the Mirror.

His work demands are extortionate. His self-belief is mountainous. He is impossible.

But his instincts are sound. He has a bloodhound’s nose for humbug and the lies of politicians. That’s why Boris Johnson was too frit to appear on GMB.

He also has a killer streak that tempts him to go beyond the extra mile, and he can’t resist the temptation.

I reckon that’s why he went over the top with his trashing of Meghan’s story, with a dismissive “don’t believe a word of it.”

Piers has left Good Morning Britain (INSTAGRAM)
Piers quit Good Morning Britain with immediate effect this week following a spat about Meghan and Harry's tell-all Oprah interview (PA)

He couldn’t know – none of us knows – whether the Duchess of Sussex was telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

He should have given her the benefit of his coruscating doubt, because the charge of racism is so grave and so obnoxious..

But as an interviewer up there with Oprah Winfrey, he knows all about “leading the witness” – a process that would be out of order in a court of law.

Is that what he objected to? If so, he should tell us. He should explain himself to the court of public opinion, anyway.

This royal interview has stirred deep divisions in society, particularly between generations. I can see no good coming ot it.

Piers Morgan was sacked from the Mirror editorship for publishing a photograph of British soldiers who had allegedly maltreated Iraqi prisoners.

The picture was a fake, but the basic element of the story was true. We may never know the whole truth behind Meghan’s story, but I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Piers Morgan, showbiz Lazarus.
