Piers Morgan urges Captain Tom Moore, 99, to get knighthood after £6m NHS fundraiser

Piers Morgan called for Captain Tom Moore to get a knighthood.

The war hero raised £6,460,000 plus for NHS after his Good Morning Britain appearance to talk about his fundraiser went viral.

WWII veteran Captain Tom talked to Piers about how he was going to use his zimmer frame to do 100 lengths of his sprawling garden in Marston Moretaine, Beds.

Now Piers has launched a campaign to get Captain Tom knighted for his service to the UK so everyone could "give him something back".

Triumphant, the outspoken presenter - who has donated £10,000 of his own money to the NHS - celebrated the war hero's efforts.

He said: "I've just launched a campaign on Twitter, as it's suddenly come to me.

"Wouldn't it be nice to see Captain Tom Moore, who served his country in World War Two and has now raised over £4 million for the NHS in a week, knighted for his service to to the country?

"He's 100 on April 30th. Wouldn't it be great if we didn't feel temptation to give it to business people, who pay money for the honour, or to celebrities for singing nice songs.

"But we give it to someone like him. That we make him Sir Tom. I think it will be great. If you're with me, let's get a campaign going and let's give him something back."

Piers followed up his Good Morning Britain chatter on social media as he urged for the nation to back him.

He added: "I’d like to see the magnificently inspiring @captaintommoore be knighted for his services to his country in WW2 & now to the NHS."

The £6million was more than Captain Tom dreamed of after he expressed his hopes of raising £1,000 for the NHS Charities Together.

He will do 10 laps at a time of his 25 metre garden for charity at the end of the month, just before his 100th birthday.

Originally from Keighley in West Yorkshire, Captain Tom trained as a civil engineer before enlisting in the Army for the Second World War.

It was in the army he rose to captain, serving in India and Burma.
