Piers Morgan 'smug' amid rumours ITV are desperate for him back on Good Morning Britain

Piers Morgan has posted a smug looking photo as he looked satisfied about rumours circling suggesting he could be returning to Good Morning Britain.

The 56-year-old posed holding a newspaper which had a headline that suggested ITV bosses were considering asking him to come back to the breakfast news show.

In the pic he posted on Twitter, Piers is seen wearing sunglasses as he pursed his lips as if mouthing "ooh".

He captioned the snap: "Well now.... [sunglasses emoji]"

This follows a rating slump since Piers left GMB.

The week that he quit the show, Good Morning Britain had overtaken BBC Breakfast in the battle for viewers, which was the first time since Piers had been co-hosting the show.

Since he left, BBC has soared above the ITV show as viewers turned off GMB following Piers left in March, after his comments about Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey caused controversy.

It has now been reported that ITV have been in contact with Piers through a third party to sound him out about a potential comeback.

Piers told The Sun: “I have had some quite random third-party feelers put out to see if I would consider a return to the show.

“I don’t want to say on the record who, but a pretty close third-party.

“As the Americans say, they reached out — there have been approaches to test the water in the wake of their obvious ratings issues."

Piers continued: “It makes me sad to see all the hard work we did to beat the BBC in viewing numbers evaporate so fast.

“It’s their problem to work out … but never say never.”

It would seem that his followers would love to see him return, with many commenting on Piers' post.

One replied on Twitter: "Just go back. For all our sakes. The show needs you and I need the show. It’s my joy before I start work."

Another added: "Take him back, have to admit I gave watching GMB when he left. Didn’t agree with everything but the view was fun."
