Piers Morgan smashes golf ball into iconic St Andrews hotel after woeful shot

Piers Morgan smashed a golf ball into an iconic hotel on the Old Course at St Andrews after slicing a horrendous shot during a celeb tournament.

The controversial TV personality teed off at the 17th hole of the world famous course as part of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship yesterday.

But the watching crowd were left in stitches after the 56-year-old shanked his opening swing out of bounds as the ball crash landed on the Old Course Hotel.

“What happens there? Why is there silence?” Piers asked shortly after the ball veered off course.

The former Good Morning Britain star was all smiles as his caddy handed him another ball to have second crack at the shot.

“The public want another one”, Piers told the crowd.

And he was given an immediate roasting from the commentators providing the coverage for Sky Sports.

“That could make the front pages tomorrow that one”, he remarked, before adding: “I think that was 406 or 408, wasn’t it?”

The official Sky Sports Twitter account even joined in on the fun, as they captioned a clip of the shot with: “Mind the windows, Piers…”

Avid tweeter Piers then went on to post his own clip of his much better stab at the drive shortly after.

He wrote: “If at first you don’t succeed…try again…and NAIL it.”

Morgan was taking part in a pro-am tournament at St Andrews with a line-up of celeb pals and couldn't wait to boast that he was on the winning team.

Piers played with Ruud Gullit and Jamie Redknapp who successfully challenged legendary cricketers Shane Warne and Michael Vaughan to a game.

After his team's win, Morgan was back on Instagram to boast to followers writing: "BREAKING: Football legends beat cricket legends-in-their-own-mirrors at @dunhilllinks hickory club challenge.

"Great to be in the winning team @ruudgullit @jamie.redknapp - and better luck next time @shanewarne23 @michaelvaughan."

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has been a longstanding and well respected golf tournament taking place in St Andrews since 2001.

As well as Morgan this year, other big names to have played in the tournament are Gary Lineker, Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew Pinsent, Hugh Grant, Justin Timberlake and Michael Phelps.
