Piers Morgan is amongst the critics who aren't impressed by the Brit Awards ' attempt to become more "inclusive."
It comes after organisers of the music awards announced today that they would scrap male and female categories in favour of gender-neutral awards in next year's ceremony.
The major awards usually include British Male Solo Artist and British Female Solo Artist, though these have now been consolidated into a single award, titled Artist of the Year.
The controversial decision means that the likes of Adele and Ed Sheeran - who have both released albums recently - could now compete against each other for the Brit Award.
A number of awards were already gender-neutral though, with Harry Styles having been up against Dua Lipa, for example, for British Single at the event held earlier this year.
Adele and Ed - if do both get nominated - may have already been competing for Best Single, though it's possible they will now be up against each other for Artist of the Year.
There won't be gendered categories for international artists now either as it was also revealed that the likes of BTS and Haim could compete for International Artist of the Year.
In a statement on Twitter, organisers said the new awards would celebrate artists "solely for their music," adding: "The BRITs have committed to making the show more inclusive."
And they further revealed that there will be four new fan voted genre awards - Alternative/Rock act, Pop/R&B act, Hip Hope/Grime/Rap act and Dance act - next year.
They said that these will give fans "more power than ever" whilst showcasing a "diverse range of genres" in the event.
The announcement earlier today sparked a backlash from some critics on social media, including from journalist and former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan.
He wrote in a tweet: "What a load of woke garbage. Won’t be long before it’s illegal to call yourself a man or woman."
According to the Sun, the decision comes after criticism of the gendered categories - including from non-binary singer Sam Smith, who said that music isn't about "division."
Announcing the new categories, those behind the annual music awards revealed that they want the event to celebrate artists "irrespective of gender."
Tom March, BRIT Chair and Co-President of Polydor Records, said: "It is important that The BRITs continue to evolve and aim to be as inclusive as possible."
He added: "It feels completely the right time to celebrate the achievements of artists for the music that they create, and the work that they do, irrespective of gender."
The new awards will make their debut at the ceremony on February 8 next year, which will be exclusively broadcast on ITV - as they have been for almost three decades.
The upcoming event will be hosted by stand-up comedian Mo Gilligan - taking over from Jack Whitehall who has presented the Brit Awards for the last four years.
Whilst Maya Jama and Clara Amfo will both be taking on presenting duties for the nominations show - set to air in December - and on the red carpet at the ceremony itself.
It's worth noting that nominees have yet to be revealed and are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
