Piers Morgan slams 'reckless and selfish' people in Liverpool after city centre scenes

Piers Morgan has slammed revellers in Liverpool for gathering in large crowds before lockdown restrictions were implemented.

From Wednesday, the Liverpool City Region will be under Tier 3 coronavirus measures, which include the closure of bars, pubs which do not serve meals, gyms, betting shops and casinos.

Prior to the restrictions coming into place, crowds gathered in Liverpool city centre on Tuesday evening.

Videos posted on social media showed groups of people flooding out cobbles around Concert Square at 10pm when bars and pubs shut.

One video, taken from a flat above the party area, showed dozens of people blocking the streets as a police car attempted to move through them.

The videos also show people singing and dancing in the street before being dispersed by police.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Officers were deployed to the area immediately and a large crowd was dispersed quickly and safely.

"All businesses in the area have now closed and the incident has been stood down."

Showing the clips on Good Morning Britain, Piers blasted those in the footage.

He said: "What annoys me about this, this kind of reckless, selfish behaviour, is obviously it’s going contribute to the spread of coronavirus.

"These are the same people of course who will be screaming loudest about having their freedom impinged by the virus and the restrictions.

"And yet they are contributing obviously to the spread of the virus."

He continued: "What is going through their minds? These young people in Liverpool. You have the worst infection rate and this is your response.

"We all have personal accountability. Yeah we can blame the government… but we should also look at ourselves"

Dr Hilary added: "When you see scenes like that it does sicken you."
