Piers Morgan slammed the Universities Minister Michelle Donelan today as he argued that students are being "hammered".
Ms Donelan appeared on Good Morning Britain today to announce more financial support for students affected by the pandemic.
But the minister said the hardship fund would not cover private rental and Piers continued to ask her why in a heated debate.
Both Piers and his co-host Susanna Reid have children at university and pointed to their experience.
Piers said his son had told him it was "totally different" and argued that students should get a refund on their fees and accommodation.
He said: "You cannot possibly charge these students full whack.
"It's not fair, it's not moral, it's not ethical, you can't do it, you have to do some kind of deal with the universities like you've done with businesses.
"I don't understand why students should not only be out of pocket but out of education, it just seems to me they're getting hammered and there's not enough people shouting out for them.
"You should be helping all students, it shouldn't be means tested, they should all get value for their money.
"It's just basically unfair.
"You've been very generous to business and very ungenerous to students and I think you should look at this again."
And viewers at home echoed Piers' sentiments and argued that something should be done about the situation.
Terry Barriff said: "I'm so angry about the whole thing, and I'm not the student! # gmb thank you for challenging her! It's about time this started being openly challenged and we need to address this. Our countries abandoned students will not forget this."

Seffie said: "Thank you for raising the student/uni issue, I feel they have been forgotten in this especially private rentals just hope something gets done."
Immie said: "Still charging full price for something you’re not getting is not moral or ethical # GMB . Piers is spot on here, they’re supporting businesses and restaurants but neglecting students. Why?"
And Patricia Smith said: "My daughter's at Manchester University and she has has NO live lectures. I'm a mere teacher and I'm doing live online lessons every day."
