Piers Morgan slams Boris Johnson for 'massive risk' over loosening lockdown for 'economic reasons'

Piers Morgan has hit out at the Prime Minister for taking what he called a 'massive risk' in loosening lockdown restrictions, accusing him of doing so for economic reasons

On Tuesday, as expected, Boris Johnson, announced a whole host of lockdown changes, with the re-opening of bars, pubs and restaurants and hairdressers, weddings of up to 30 people being allowed, families able to form bubbles and a dropping of the two metre rule the biggest ones to come out of his address to Parliament.

But, while many people have welcomed the Government easing of lockdown, which will come into force on July 4, others have said its too soon and Piers is definitely in the latter camp.

Taking to Twitter after the PM's address to the nation in Tuesday's daily briefing, Piers tweeted: "I don’t want to be a ‘scare-mongering’ killjoy, but Boris Johnson is taking a massive risk in unlocking Britain this much, this quickly. And he’s doing it for economic not public health reasons.

"Most of us haven’t had this virus yet so please be very careful from July 4."

Piers' post divided opinion amongst his followers, with some sharing his other concerns and others arguing the country needs to get back to some sort of 'normal'.

One reacted: "He hasn’t got a choice, give it much longer and they’ll be nothing left. The economy’s taken a huge hit as it is." In agreement, another responded: "If millions of jobs are lost, and people are plunged into financial ruin, that will effect peoples mental health. Also, without unlocking, many others will die by being too scared to go to the docs or hospital when they should. It’s a balanced risk, and is needed.

However, siding with Piers another of his followers reacted: "I agree with you which is rare tbh," and another tweeted: "The Sage advisers warned Johnson against relaxing too many rules too quickly. He chose to ignore their warnings for purely political reasons."
