Piers Morgan shows off 'cracking seat' as he ditches the National Television Awards

Piers Morgan has the best seat in the house at the National Television Awards - at his own home.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter is up for a gong at the dazzling ceremony which takes place on Thursday night.

But Piers, 56, won't be around to collect it if he does win.

The TV star and journalist is up against former rival Holly Willoughby, Ant & Dec, Bradley Walsh, and Alison Hammond for the TV presenter prize.

As the awards kicked off live on ITV, Piers tweeted: "Got a cracking seat. #NTAs," alongside a photo of his television screen and his feet up on the table.

After canvassing for votes before they closed at midday, Piers confirmed he wouldn't be at the ceremony.

He did, however, ask Ricky Gervais if he could pick up his award if he won.

But that may have changed just an hour before the ceremony as he tweeted: "UPDATE: The @OfficialNTAs asked me who would accept the award on my behalf if I won Presenter of the Year.

"'If I’ve won, I’ll come down and accept it myself,' I replied excitedly, rapidly dusting off my Tux and tickling my speech.

"Since then, deafening silence."

Piers was nominated for the award following a turbulent first half of 2021 which saw him make a sudden exite from GMB over comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex.

But he's got stiff competition as Ant and Dec make their annual return to the award as they target a staggering 20th gong.

Piers, however, wants to end that incredible run.

He told the Mirror : "I deserve to win because everyone’s sick and tired of Ant and Dec automatically winning this award, which bears no relation to reality.

"They’ve done nothing special in the last year, even they would admit that.

"I think it’s time the procession came to a shuddering halt and the Morgan bandwagon was rewarded with glory.

"We can’t have those two little vain-glorious Geordies standing there for the 20th consecutive year. Ant got one one year when he hadn’t even worked. It’s ridiculous."
