Piers Morgan says new job is 'bigger than GMB' and he needs a new 'TV wife'

Piers Morgan said his new job is “bigger than Good Morning Britain” and that he's looking for a new TV wife.

The former newspaper editor, 56, dramatically quit the ITV morning show back in March, storming off the set live on-air after a heated row over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

After appearing at The Sun's Who Cares Wins Awards on Tuesday, Piers teased an exciting new project, and said he was on the lookout for a replacement for his former GMB co-host Susanna Reid.

"Have patience, it won't be long. It's a lot bigger than GMB,” he told The Sun. "It's not fighting talk, it's just a lot bigger. You'll see soon."

"You never know, I might be auditioning for new wives…” he quipped.

He reunited on Wednesday night with his former GMB colleagues at the TRIC Awards, as he stunned the star-studded audience, which included David Beckham and Prince William, by winning the gong for Best News Presenter.

After winning the coveted broadcasting award, Piers continued his tirade against the Duchess of Sussex, and thanked her for helping to boost his career.

“Honestly, she’s been great for my career to be honest with you. I really want to thank her,” he told the Mirror, when asked what Meghan would think of his win.

During Meghan and Harry’s interview in March, the then-pregnant former royal said she had suicidal thoughts due to the constant criticism and abuse she faced in the public eye.

Piers blasted the ex-actress during a fiery tirade on GMB the following day, and said: “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”

He was heavily criticised for his comments, and abruptly walked off the show after being confronted by his co-presenter Alex Beresford.

More than 50,000 people complained over the comments Piers made about the Duchess, and the programme was cleared earlier this month after an investigation by TV watchdog Ofcom.

Following the ruling, Chief executive of ITV Dame Carolyn McCall said the broadcaster “vigorously” defended Piers during the investigation.

She said there is “no way we wouldn’t be absolutely not just endorsing but championing freedom of speech and freedom of expression”.

Piers criticised Meghan for allegedly speaking to Dame Carolyn directly, and voicing her concerns about his controversial comments.

He said the duchess reached out to the ITV boss the night before he “was forced out” and claimed the “whiny, fork-tongued actress” had tried to “play the gender card”.

“Apparently, she stressed that she was writing to Dame Carolyn personally because they were both women and mothers, a nauseating playing of the gender and maternity card if ever there was one.

“What has the world come to when a whiny, fork-tongued actress can dictate who presents a morning television news programme?” he wrote in his MailOnline column.
