Piers Morgan says Kate Garraway's husband Derek is 'still effectively in a coma'

Piers Morgan has said that Kate Garraway's husband is "still effectively in a coma".

Derek Draper caught coronavirus last year and Covid wreaked havoc on his body, with doctors putting him into an induced coma.

He is one of the longest-affected coronavirus patients in the whole of the UK, and while he returned home earlier this year, Derek is still very unwell.

Piers, 56, revealed this week that he tested positive for Covid after attending the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium earlier this month.

He has encouraged people to get the vaccine after his own battle with the virus.

Writing in his Mail on Sunday column, Piers said: "Derek is three years younger than me and remains in a virtual coma 15 months after being rushed to hospital at the height of the first wave of the pandemic."

He went on: "Derek is back home under 24/7 nursing care but is still effectively in a coma despite occasional hopeful glimmers of cognisant response."

"But honestly, people don't know the half of it," he added.

Piers had both doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine before he tested positive.

He began suffering symptoms two days after the match, which included a fever, body aches and sneezing and coughing fits.

Piers said in his column that he thought it was "unfair" that Derek never had the chance to get the vaccine.

The TV presenter added: "I've been thinking about you guys so much in the past week. I've felt pretty awful with Covid but the vaccine may well have saved my life. Derek never had the chance to take one.

"That just seems so desperately unfair."

His comments come after Kate voiced her support NHS workers on Good Morning Britain on Thursday after it was announced that staff would be given a 3% pay rise by the Government.

She said: "I can't say enough: they do deserve more. But it is also a difficult decision for the Government to work out how to balance and go forward and deal with the tax rises we may all have to face, you know?"

Kate added: "Nurses, I think, saved Derek's life and are still very involved in keeping him alive because it was the nurses's care as well as the brilliant doctors, but that care during those critical days and months made all the difference.

"But the problem is that originally it was 2%,then it was moved to 1%, then it moved to an independent review that’s decided 3% and we're in two trillion pounds worth of debt.

"There are people in the private sector who are working incredibly hard, maybe in less emotive roles, but incredibly hard, who are losing their jobs."
