Piers Morgan says he should have been 'much harder' on Government after Cummings' damning claims

Piers Morgan has said he wished he'd been 'much much harder' on the Government in a scathing attack in the wake of Dominic Cummings' damning claims against them.

On Wednesday morning, Cummings, Boris Johnson's former aide, gave evidence to the Commons Health and Social Care and Science and Technology Committees in a lengthy hearing.

And his claims were explosive from the start, with the 49-year-old, who infamously broke Covid rules last year to head from London to County Durham, alleging that the PM regarded coronavirus as "the new swine flu" and just "a scare story."

He added: "The truth is that senior ministers, senior officials, senior advisers like me fell disastrously short of the standards that the public has a right to expect of its Government in a crisis like this.

"When the public needed us most the Government failed."

Taking aim at Matt Hancock, Cummings later said that the health secretary should have been fired, saying: "There's no doubt at all that many senior people performed far, far disastrously below the standards which the country has a right to expect. I think the Secretary of State for Health is certainly one of those people.

"I said repeatedly to the Prime Minister that he should be fired, so did the cabinet secretary, so did many other senior people."

Former Good Morning Britain host Piers clashed with Hancock on numerous occasions in on air spats, as well as locking horns with many other Government ministers over the past 12 months.

And reacting to Cummings' alarming allegations, he tweeted what he titled a 'PERSONAL STATEMENT', writing: "I'd like to sincerely apologise for the way I held the Govt to account during this Pandemic.

"It's quite clear from Cummings' shocking testimony that I should have gone much much harder. Sorry."

Agreeing with Life Stories presenter Piers, one of his many followers reacted: "Can everyone that defended Boris with the phrase "they're trying their best" please step forward," and, reassuring him, another replied: "You were the only one trying to get answers with difficult questions ! Well done"

However, others weren't impressed with Piers immediate acceptance of Cummings' claims, with another tweeting: "Piers never believed anything Cummings said for 8 months, now believes everything he is saying in a couple of hours.."
