Piers Morgan says brave Captain Tom was 'racked with pain' with every step

Good Morning Britain 's Piers Morgan reminded viewers that the late Captain Sir Tom Moore was in real pain in the final years of his life, especially during his famous fundraising walks.

The WWII veteran, who died on Tuesday aged 100, raised more than £39million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden.

But due to a horror accident in his home, he was in agony the entire time - though he never let it show and certainly never let it stop him.

Piers said: "Remember the pain he was in, I remember talking to him about this before we did Life Stories.

"He was in real pain doing that walk, he'd had a really bad fall and the reason he wanted to repay the NHS for saving his life, was when he had this terrible fall."

The show then played a clip of Captain Tom speaking about the accident on Piers Morgan's Life Stories.

Piers said: "It was a serious fall. Do you remember it?"

Captain Tom replied: "Yes, if you look at the dishwasher, you can see the dent where my head hit it.

" It was rather painful, but in the end, I am still here."

Piers asked: "What did you feel about the attention from nurses and the doctors?"

Captain Tom said: "It was perfection, it meant I had something to thank them for."

Back in the studio, Piers said: "It was motivation for him but it also meant, when he did the walk, he had prostate cancer, he was in agony.

"This was a guy who did not want invasive surgery.

"He was really racked with a lot of pain and every step of that walk - 100 laps of the garden, you may think anybody could do that - but it hurt him.

"You try doing that at 99 years old and doing it when you have been through what Captain Tom experienced in the past two years.

"Look at him there, he is keeping on, but every time he dropped his foot, he said, it was painful."
