Piers Morgan said ITV did not require him to apologise for comments about Meghan Markle on GMB

Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan claims ITV did not require him to make an apology for remarks he made about Meghan Markle's mental health.

The controversial presenter left his role earlier this month after comments he made about Meghan and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey sparked a furious backlash, The Mirror reports.

He was then taken to task by Bristol weatherman Alex Beresford who accused him of “trashing” Meghan.

During episodes of Good Morning Britain on March 8-9, Piers doubted some of the claims Meghan had made during the interview - and said he didn’t believe her when she spoke about her own suicidal thoughts.

ITV confirmed Piers would no longer be hosting the show on the evening of March 9.

Now Piers has insisted that the broadcaster didn't ask him to apologise - but rather to clarify exactly what he meant on the March 9th show.

He writes in a column for The Mail On Sunday : "To compound my unease, the mental health charity Mind – which gave me an award in 2012 for promoting mental health issues in Life Stories interviews with troubled stars such as Frank Bruno and Paul Gascoigne – issued a statement saying it was 'disappointed and concerned to see Piers Morgan's comments on not believing Meghan's experiences about suicidal thoughts'.

"It ended with the ominously threatening words: 'We are in conversations with ITV about this.'

"ITV asked me to clarify what I meant on tomorrow's show, which I'm happy to do as it's been deliberately misconstrued to suggest I don't think victims of mental illness should be believed.

"I was told I didn't need to apologise."

The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment.
