Piers Morgan's Good Morning Britain Meghan Markle rant breaks Ofcom complaints record

Piers Morgan's rant about Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain has attracted more complaints than any other event in UK TV history.

A total of 57,121 people complained to Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, about Piers Morgan's comments, according to the Daily Star.

Among other bold statements on Markle, Morgan said: "I'm sorry, I don’t believe a word she says. I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report."

This was following Markle's admission in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she had contemplated taking her own life, leading mental health charities to criticise Morgan's comments.

He later sought to clarify his remarks: "I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what she said. But let me just state for the record my position on mental illness and on suicide.

"Mental illness and suicide, these are clearly very serious things and should be taken extremely seriously, and if somebody is feeling that way they should get the treatment and help that they need every time and if they belong to an institution like the Royal family and they go and seek that help, they should absolutely be given it. It’s not for me to question whether she felt suicidal, I wasn't in her mind and that’s for her to say."

Morgan claimed his comments referred to not believing Meghan's assertion that the Royal family did not help her when she told them of her mental health issues. The same day, however, Morgan stormed off set when Bristolian and fellow GMB presenter Alex Beresford challenged him over his comments. Morgan later dramatically quit the show.

Ofcom's previous record number of complaints was around 45,000 received following an incident in a 2007 episode of Celebrity Big Brother, during which the late Jade Goody and model Danielle Lloyd made racially insensitive comments to Shilpa Shetty.

Ofcom's investigation into Morgan's comments on Good Morning Britain is ongoing.
