Piers Morgan's GMB row and the 10 moments that drove record year for Ofcom complaints

Ofcom has revealed its list of the top 10 TV moments which received the most complaints this year.

The broadcasting watchdog released its annual review earlier this week and confirmed it was a record breaking year for complaints.

More than 150,000 viewers and listeners lodged complaints over the past 12 months, which is a 124% increase on 2020.

The regulator's Director of Standard and Audience Protection claims the rise demonstrates the continued importance TV and radio has to the British people.

Adam Baxter said: "These volumes demonstrate the British public’s interest and passion for TV and radio programmes, and shows just how important they are to the cultural fabric of our nation.

"People rightly expect certain standards on TV and radio – and that means having their say when they come across something that troubles them."

The regulator recorded 20 breaches of its rules throughout 2021 which were mainly in relation to "hate speech or harmful, scientifically unfounded coronavirus misinformation".

Ofcom complaints do not include BBC programmes, which has its own regulation system - and the top five programmes accounted for 80% of all issues.

We've rounded up a list of the top 10 TV moments which received the most complaints below.

1. Piers Morgan's comments about Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain

The most controversial moment of the year was Piers Morgan's comments about Meghan Markle on the March 8 edition of Good Morning Britain.

The 56-year-old broadcaster said he "didn't believe a word" Meghan Markle said in her interview with Oprah Winfrey when she opened up on issues with her mental health.

The episode received 54,595 complaints and Mr Morgan quit the ITV news programme when he was challenged on his comments.

2. Faye Winter's treatment of Teddy Soares on Love Island

Viewers of Love Island were upset at the treatment of Teddy Soares who was the victim of an "unnecessarily cruel" twist while at the second villa.

Teddy was coupled up with Faye Winter, who was waiting for him in the main villa while he was in Casa Amor. However, Faye saw him kissing another woman which forced her into recoupling with one of the new Islanders.

However, fans felt Teddy was unfairly painted as the kiss was part of a challenge, and he expressed guilt over the smooch, but this was not shown to Faye.

Faye vented her fury at Teddy on the episode that aired on August 6 which received 24,921 complaints.

3. "Insensitive" comments on Celebrities: What's happened to your face?

Channel 5 was hit with 7,125 complaints for this two-part documentary series that focused on famous names who may have had cosmetic surgery.

Charlotte Crosby had her appearance dissected on the programme and the Geordie Shore star revealed her agent tried to have the show pulled before it aired for being "immoral and insensitive".

She said: "She very clearly outlined to Crackit Productions not just how immoral and insensitive it was but how detrimental this would be to my mental health. They ignored her, despite repeated correspondence, and ran with it regardless.

"That hour could have been used to host a mental health documentary. That hour could have educated the public in the many issues & good causes which need publicity."

Channel 5 have since removed the programme on Charlotte Crosby from its My5 streaming channel.

4. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bombshell interview with Oprah

ITV was flooded with 6,486 complaints after airing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview with the American talk show host.

The discussion saw the married couple open up on how difficult life was in the royal family and why they decided to move to the US.

According to Press Gazette, newspaper and TV journalists were amongst the complainants who claimed the allegations about the Royal family had been broadcast as facts without giving any right of reply.

5. Casa Amor drama in Love Island

The ITV2 dating show was hit with 4,337 complaints after a postcard arrived at the villa on the July 28 episode.

The second villa added an extra layer of tension this season as the boys were whisked away from their partners and paired with six new girls.

This was the beginning of the Faye and Teddy saga that exploded a week later and led to the second most complained about moment of the year.

The postcard sent to the main villa featured the boys antics in Casa Amor, which included Teddy's "kiss", which viewers thought was misleading.

6. Dr Hilary Jones' vaccine statistics claim on Lorraine

Dr Hilary Jones' comments on Lorraine earlier this month prompted 3,769 complaints.

The medical professional appeared on the December 6 episode of the popular ITV programme and claimed that “90 per cent of the people that are in hospital are unvaccinated”.

Lorraine added how "that's a figure that we have to really concentrate on", but viewers complained the statistics were incorrect.

Ofcom said the "complaints are under assessment".

7. Piers Morgan, Charlotte Hawkins and Alex Beresford on Good Morning Britain

Piers Morgan came under fire from viewers the day after his comments about Meghan Markle.

The broadcaster was hosting the March 9 edition of Good Morning Britain alongside Charlotte Hawkins.

During the show, he asked his co-anchor to stand up so that viewers could see her skirt.

The episode also featured the infamous walk off following the confrontation with Alex Beresford.

The controversial episode received 3,249 complaints.

8. Dr Hilary Jones on Good Morning Britain

Dr Hilary Jones also prompted complaints for an appearance on the November 1 edition of Good Morning Britain.

The regular contributor warned viewers over "bogus" letter drops about the risks of vaccination purporting to be from the government.

Dr Hilary said the "hoax" leaflets were dangerous misinformation as it would put a lot of people off the vaccine before anchor Richard Madeley tore the yellow card up.

The episode received 2,632 complaints.

9. "Ditching unvaccinated friends" debate on Good Morning Britain

The ITV news programme was bombarded with complaints after a debate on whether you should "ditch unvaccinated friends."

The discussion was anchored by Adil Ray and Ranvir Singh who welcomed guests Dominique Samuels and Nick Hewer.

Nick said he was concerned about inviting a friend to a dinner party if they had not been vaccinated, but Dominique said this was "controlling".

The episode aired on June 1 and received 2,104 complaints.

10. How to lose the lockdown pounds on This Morning

ITV's flagship daytime programme was flooded with complaints following an interview with doctor Michael Mosley.

Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary fronted the edition which aired on February 26 and fans were outraged when the doctor advocated an 800 calorie a day diet.

Dr Mosley said he is favour of the method as part of a "rapid weight loss" programme and claimed studies have shown that consuming 800 to 1,000 calories a day can be "safe and effective".

Fans on Twitter described the segment as " damaging " and the episode received 1,942 complaints.
