Piers Morgan responds to GMB Ofcom complaints after Meghan Markle comments

Piers Morgan has responded to the news his comments about Meghan Markle have racked up a record breaking number of Ofcom complaints.

The controversial TV personality came under heavy fire when discussing Prince Harry and Meghan's interview, saying he "did not believe" the mum-to-be.

More than 57,000 complaints have been made so far about the show's coverage of the Oprah Winfrey interview.

The duchess herself is reportedly among those who have complained to the watchdog.

But Piers has responded to the news, claiming "the majority of Britons" back him.

He said: "Only 57,000? I've had more people than that come up and congratulate me in the street for what I said.

"The vast majority of Britons are right behind me."

It has been nine days since the presenter left Good Morning Britain after storming off set when confronted by Bristol's very own Alex Beresford.

Piers' claim about his fans congratulating him therefore seems unlikely. To have reached the 57,000 figure by now, he would need to have been in public, on a street and available to be congratulated for 18 hours each and every day since he walked out.

Ofcom, which has regulated British TV since 2003, has already launched an investigation into Good Morning Britain. On Wednesday, a spokeswoman said the investigation was ongoing.

The BBC reported that a further 4,398 complaints have been made about the Oprah interview itself, which was broadcast on ITV on March 8.

Morgan also announced his return to TV this morning, saying: "Reports of my ITV demise have been greatly exaggerated. I'm back already."
