Piers Morgan red-faced after striking fear into viewers by saying asteroid is four miles away

Piers Morgan was left red-faced after accidentally telling Good Morning Britain viewers that an asteroid was just four miles away.

The 55-year-old struck fear into GMB fans with the comment, which he later admitted was wrong after being corrected by co-host Susanna Reid - who said that it was actually four million miles away.

Just a slight difference...

Appearing on the ITV programme, Piers said: "Talking about something wrong, we have an asteroid crashing within four miles of Earth."

Susanna interjected: "Is it four miles?? I thought it was four million miles?!"

Piers laughed at his blunder, but later on in the show explained: "An asteroid that is 1.2 miles wide will fly by Earth next week, it's not expected to collide with our planet - that's comforting!"

He added: "On April 29th, tomorrow, it will pass within 3,908,000 miles of Earth, moving at 19,000 miles an hour.

"It'll be 16 times further than the distance between the Earth and the moon, so we are probably going to be okay."

Susanna ribbed him about the mistake again, joking: "So when you said within four miles... Can we just downgrade that warning?

"Hashtag: Fake News!"

Cringing, Piers responded with a laugh: "Yes, I didn't want to panic anyone."

He continued: "I think I must have read how wide it is, but it's only 1.2 miles wide.

"What a great big lump of rock, imagine that landing on your head!"
