Piers Morgan reacts to lockdown with powerful plea to the nation to honour WW2 generation

Piers Morgan has issued a hard-hitting plea to the nation after Boris Johnson's stark announcement on the UK effectively going into lockdown on Monday night.

After scenes from the weekend of families and friends flocking to parks and beaches across the country, the Prime Minister made a statement to the country at 8.30pm in which he told millions watching at home of the rules they would need to abide by during lockdown.

These are the reasons you're now allowed to go out are:

  • To shop for necessities (food and medication) - but this should be done "as infrequently as possible".
  • Once a day you can go out for exercise - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with people you live with.
  • For a medical need, eg to go to hospital.
  • To provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
  • Travelling to and from work, but only where this is "absolutely necessary" and cannot be done from home.

After being left incensed by the actions of what he called 'morons', Good Morning Britain host Piers reacted to the PM's address with a fierce call to arms to all of his followers, tweeting: "It's down to us now. We ALL owe it to each other to abide by these new lockdown rules. If we don't, more people will die. It's as simple as that.

"This is an incredibly serious moment for the country. Time to step up & honour the spirit & heart of the WW2 generation."

His post, which at the time of writing had been retweeted 7,400 times, received a huge reaction. One followers commented: "You’ve been so incredibly vocal Piers that your calling for more dramatic measures will have inevitably saved so many lives. I’m not sure you hear it much, so thank you!!"

However others took him to task, especially those who were still being forced to work themselves or knew others that were.

One tweeted: "What about construction workers ? We all have to travel to work tomorrow! How bad is that?" and another reacted: "Here's ol' Panicky Piers telling us what to do again...The thing is, Boris just went on TV to tell us all this.

"Not only that, but the TV stations showed his speech in full instead of getting their "editors" to "interpret" it.So thanks Piers, but we don't need you. Never did."
