Piers Morgan quotes Nelson Mandela as stars praise GMB's Kate Garraway's Finding Derek documentary

Celebrities have been sharing their reactions to Kate Garraway’s moving documentary about her husband Derek Draper who remains in intensive care after contracting Covid a year ago.

Finding Derek, which was shown on ITV last night, showed how his illness has impacted Kate and her family in the past year.

The former political adviser, aged 53, caught coronavirus last March and since then has lost eight stone in weight, suffered kidney failure, has holes in his lungs and has a damaged live and pancreas.

Kate, 53, a presenter on Good Morning Britain, shared personal footage of her husband in hospital in the documentary and spoke movingly about the impact on her family.

Her courage, and that of her family, touched millions of viewers last night and lead to an outpouring of support from fellow GMB presenters, as well as other celebrities and journalists.

Below are just some of the moving responses to the documentary, which is available to watch on the ITV hub.

Former GMB presenter Piers Morgan tweeted last night while the documentary was being aired that it was ‘heart-breaking."

This morning he tweeted: “Love You @kategarraway” and included an image of Nelson Mandela with the words "It always seems impossible until it's done."

GMB presenter Susanna Reid tweeted about Kate: “She is a tower of strength, courage and love.”

The BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, who goes up against GMB in the early morning ratings, said: “Really tough watching #FindingDerek Nothing but respect for @kategarraway & the rest of her family.”

Children’s author Michael Rosen, who is still living with the after-effects of his life-threatening battle with coronavirus, said: “FindingDerek documentary last night. What an ordeal. Wishing them all the very, very best. A salutary reminder that the disaster of Covid is not only about deaths - terrible though that is, of course, but also LongCovid for 1000s too.”

Broadcaster and journalist India Willoughby said: “In awe of Kate Garraway. Hope all the idiots who think their life is being ruined by having to wear a mask are watching. Poor you. Perspective."

And musician and presenter Myleene Klass: “you are so full of bravery and courage. Derek has the most incredible woman standing by him x”

Reality star Gemma Collins said: “so much love right now and ongoing heartbreaking what you are going through.”
