Piers Morgan promises to pay every NHS worker's parking ticket

Piers Morgan has said he will pay any parking ticket that an NHS worker receives during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Good Morning Britain presenter made his pledge live on air during an interview with Kirstie Allsopp, who is self isolating after her husband Ben Andersen tested positive for COVID-19.

His words came after hearing that parking tickets are still being issued to health workers who are looking after patients of the deadly virus.

The housing expert said that “one has to hope” that any tickets issued during this time would be void.

Piers replied: “I will say now to any health worker, during the future of this crisis, however long it lasts, if any of you get a parking ticket at a hospital where you’re working, I will pay it for you.

“I will then go to the government and have the battle - you don’t get involved.

“Send it here to Good Morning Britain and I will pay the parking ticket, if that is what it takes.”

Kirstie chipped in to say she would go halves with him before urging people to be “kind” and “sensible” and “not be as angry” about everything.

Piers’ promise came off the back of an interview with MP Robert Jenrick, who was evasive when asked directly if hospital workers could ignore any fines they receive during the crisis.

His co-host Ranvir Singh then brought up the situation of a nurse, Cheryl Curtis, from Glasgow, who said she had received fines “every day” following her shifts at a hospital.

Ranvir said: “Could you tell Cheryl that she should not pay those parking fines, and neither should any other medic who is getting parking tickets during this crisis?”

Mr Jenrick said he could not comment on that issue without knowing the “exact circumstances” but said he would “speak to all local councils in England, which is my jurisdiction, and ask them to support all health care workers through this time.”

GMB airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
