Piers Morgan has praised “his friend” Kate Garraway in a tweet denouncing people who “whine about wearing a mask”.

Morgan’s message comes after Garraway gave an updatedon her husband Derek Draper, sharing the "heartbreaking: first word he has been able to say since he became ill with coronavirus seven months ago.

The Good Morning Britain presenter's husband was admitted to hospital in March, with the 53-year-old's conditioning quickly worsening.

He was taken to intensive care and placed in a medically-induced coma in July, despite no longer testing positive for Covid-19.

It was then reported that Draper – a former lobbyist – was in a minimal state of consciousness, having come out of a “deeper coma”.

“When I hear people whining about wearing a mask, or not being able to get lashed with 20 mates every night, I also think of my friend Kate Garraway’s extraordinary courage, resilience & dignity in the face of unbearable  heartache,” Morgan wrote on Twitter on Saturday (31 October).

He added: “And I say to the whiners: shut up.”

Garraway revealed that Draper spoke his first word in 214 days, and it was “pain”.

She said the “breakthrough” was “both amazing yet heartbreaking”.

Garraway will appear in a one-off ITV documentary about coronavirus in which she will open up about the effect the illness has had on her family.
