Piers Morgan praises 'inspirational' reporter who revealed cancer diagnosis on air

Piers Morgan has praised an 'inspirational' news anchor who bravely announced live on-air that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Christiane Amanpour, who is the chief anchor for CNN, revealed earlier on today's show that she had undergone major surgery and is set to face months of chemotherapy.

It came after a whirlwind four weeks during which time doctors informed the reporter that she had ovarian cancer.

However, the 63-year-old journalist was remaining optimistic and went on to urge others to listen to their bodies and not allow their medical worries to be dismissed.

Piers has since taken to social media to praise Christiane for her strength as she opened up about the subject.

"Very sorry to hear this, Christiane, but no surprise to see you tackling cancer head-on with the same inspirational strength, fortitude & optimism that you tackle everything in life. I wish you every success with your treatment," Piers wrote on social media.

Earlier, Christiane had shared a snippet from the announcement on her Twitter page.

In the video, she said, "I want to first thank Bianna Golodryga and the whole team for holding down the fort so well over the last four weeks, which have been a bit of a rollercoaster for me.

"Because during that time, like millions of women around the world, I had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

"I've had successful major surgery to remove it and I'm now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best long-term prognosis. And, I'm confident."

Christiane went on: "I'm also fortunate to have health insurance through work, and incredible doctors who are treating me in a country underpinned by the brilliant NHS.

"I'm telling you this in the interest of transparency, but in truth really in a shout out to early diagnosis. To urge women to educate themselves on this disease.

"To get all the regular screenings and scans that you can, to always listen to your bodies and, of course, to ensure that you legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.

"So that's my news, now let's get to the news," the inspiring reporter concluded.

Christiane's incredible news career spans decades and she has become one of the most fearless and coveted reporters of international conflict.

Since sharing her personal news, Christiane has been inundated with supportive messages as viewers flocked to praise the reporter for pushing for screening and early detection of cancers.
