Piers Morgan 'offers to return to Good Morning Britain' amid reports of viewing figure plummet

Piers Morgan has 'offered' to step back into the Good Morning Britain hot seat amid reports of a plunge in viewers since his departure.

The 56-year-old dramatically quit the show after he was challenged by co-stars on his views on Meghan Markle in March this year.

A number of figures have temporarily filled in Piers’ boots since then, such as Adil Ray and Richard Madeley - but the search for a permanent replacement continues.

Viewing figures for the morning ITV show have reportedly plummeted to a record low of just 450,000 people.

Around 1.9m people are believed to have tuned into GMB for reaction following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey - just days before Piers’ departure.

Responding to the news of the viewing slump, Piers tweeted: “Jeez. Should I set my alarm for 4.45am again?”

The journalist was heavily criticised for dismissing Meghan Markle’s account of suffering suicidal thoughts and experiencing alleged racism at the hands of the Royal Family.

He said that he “didn’t believe a word” when the Duchess of Sussex laid bare her struggles during an interview with US TV icon Winfrey.

The comments sparked over 57,000 complaints to Ofcom. The number is the highest ever recorded in the broadcast watchdog’s history.

It later emerged that Meghan Markle made her own formal complaint to Ofcom about the TV host’s conduct.

His comments were also criticised by a number of mental health charities, who said they were “disappointed and concerned”.
