Piers Morgan's rude comment about Kate Garraway and Derek Draper made it into wedding

Kate Garraway made her big return to Good Morning Britain on Tuesday after taking months off when her husband Derek Draper fell seriously ill.

And as soon as she was back in the ITV studios she fell victim to her co-host Piers Morgan's sharp wit.

The duo were discussing Kate, 53, and Derek's marriage when she recalled a hilariously mean comment he made about Derek when they first started going out.

Piers, 55, told Kate that he would have "had a crack" on her if he'd known she had such low standards, a comment she found so funny it became part of their wedding day.

Derek, 52, has been in hospital since March after he caught coronavirus, which he has now recovered from but remains in intensive care.

On today's Good Morning Britain Piers Morgan recalled the hilariously mean comment he made about Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper when he found out they were going out (ITV)

Doctors put him in an induced coma after the deadly bug started attacking his organs.

Kate has been told by his medical team to return to work as his recovery could take years.

Speaking about Kate and Derek's union today, Piers said: "Let's talk about your marriage for a moment because you were a very unlikely duo."

"Oh utterly!" Kate agreed.

Kate returned to GMB today (ITV)

Piers told her: "Because I knew you both separately but when I knew you were getting married I was like 'What?!'"

But Kate wanted viewers to know exactly what Piers had said.

She explained: "Let's get the quote right because it was actually part of our wedding in the end.

"We met, I think it was at some Press Gazette awards, you came in and you said 'Derek - I won't swear - Draper?'

The rude comment made by Piers became part of Kate and Derek's wedding (ITV)

"'If I'd known your bar was set so low I'd have had a crack myself."

"Completely true," Piers laughed.

Kate added: "Completely true! Derek was there and you said 'Hi Derek.' It made Derek laugh."

"It made Derek laugh and you put it on your wedding menus!" Piers said.

*Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
