Piers Morgan lets rip at Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance in astonishing rant over briefing "farce"

Piers Morgan has laid into Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance in an explosive rant over what he branded a "farce" of a briefing on Monday

The Government's Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Officer addressed the nation live in a televised broadcast and make some stark predictions about where the second wave of coronavirus could be headed if things get out of hand.

They warned the pandemic is doubling roughly every seven days and if it continues to do so there would be about 50,000 new cases per day by the middle of next month, with a subsequent rise in hospitalisations and deaths as a result.

They hosted the briefing hours before, after much speculation, it was confirmed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will speak to the nation on Tuesday night.

But Piers took exception to their warning not coming with clear predictions and the fact it wasn't followed by an opportunity for the media to ask questions.

Piers: "I'm trying to expose the farce of what happened yesterday.

"They didn't take questions which I thought was a bit like North Korea!

"If you're going to drop those bombshells on people...and they deliberately used that 50,000 figure to terrify everybody."

Defending the Government, Dr Hilary replied: "Who can predict where we're going to be?" but not backing down, Piers retorted: "Hang on, we locked down in March because the data model predicted half a million would die, that's why we locked down.

"I agree with that lockdown. I didn't know whether that number was true or not but we do know there were a number of predictions made.

"On the basis of those predictions, draconian action was taken.

"This time they're avoiding the word prediction, I suspect because of what happened last time but this difference between scenario and prediction doesn't exist."
