Piers Morgan leads praise for England's Lionesses after Euro semi-final win

Piers Morgan has led a host of celebrities in praising England for reaching the Women’s Euro final after beating Sweden in a sensational 4-0 semi-final.

It was Beth Mead again making all the headlines with another starring performance as the match got off to a nail-biting start, until she scored the first goal of the match in the 34th minute.

Fans at Bramall Lane erupted into song as echoes of “It’s Coming Home” could be heard across the country while the Lionesses shut down every attempt by Sweden and secured another three goals.

Sarina Wiegman’s heroes are now just 90 minutes from glory and a place in English football history.

Following their victory, the team were congratulated by a host of famous faces including Gary Lineker, Prince William, England's Men's captain Harry Kane and player-turned-broadcaster Alex Scott.

Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan threw his support behind the team as they set their sights on a Wembley win on Sunday.

He tweeted: “Football’s coming home… to people who don’t identify as men! #LionessesLive

Celebrity Gogglebox star and Capital FM breakfast show DJ Roman Kemp took to his Instagram to share his disbelief at what he was unfolding on his telly.

He wrote: “Outrageous. We are mustard. @leahwilliamsonn bring it home!”

Former BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker tweeted: “Brilliant stuff #Lionesses Bring on the big one.”

England’s comfortable win sends the Lionesess into this Sunday's Euro 2022 grand final.

England's Men's captain Harry Kane tweeted: "Yesss @Lionesses ! Bring on the final."

While Gary Lineker wrote: "Fabulous performance and win for @Lionesses. Wonderful."

Broadcaster Charlie Webster wrote: "This is just wonderful and special to see. Look at that atmosphere, the crowd, the class on the pitch, the confidence, the tactics. This is England. This is football."

And player-turned-broadcaster Alex Scott – who hosted the BBC’s post-match coverage – couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Overcome, Alex said: "Is this real? What England have shown throughout this tournament, which is absolutely a credit to them, is all sides [of the game].

“You’ve seen them frustrated in their opening game, you’ve seen them blow away Norway, you’ve seen them on the ropes against Spain and today a pure and intelligent England finding a way back into the game and brushing away Sweden.

“Every single game England have had different players step up.”

Wayne Rooney took to his Instagram to gush: “What a performance by @lionesses tonight. A well deserved #WEURO2022 Final coming up. Congratulations to all the players and staff."

Ahead of the semi-final David Beckham thanked the England football team for inspiring his only daughter Harper.

The dad-of-four took to Instagram to share his excitement ahead of tonight's match.

"Hey Lionesses, it's David here. So I just wanted to send you a message, firstly, to say congratulations on an incredible tournament so far," he beamed.

"It's been so uplifting, it's been so exciting and it's been so inspiring. And, for me personally, I have a daughter so for her to be inspired by you girls and your performances has been incredible."

The former Manchester United ace continued: "But it's not just the girls that are getting inspired, the boys are getting inspired as well by this, and we all know that when big tournaments come around, our country and our fans get behind us like no other.

"So it's been incredible to see, the performances, but for me personally, the game against Spain is really what brings the nation together.

"So to win a game like that in that manner. It really has uplifted the whole country."

David then added: "So, good luck for the semi final, we are all behind you, we're all excited to see it, and I know there's one person who's really excited to see it and that is my daughter Harper. So thank you for inspiring her and good luck girls."

England’s women have been to the Euros eight times and have reached the final twice, but are yet to win the competition.

They were so close to winning in the first year after coming second to Sweden following penalties.

At the time they only had 2,500 fans watching, whereas this year they were watched by nine million viewers on the BBC.
