Piers Morgan jokes he's taking over from nemesis Dan Walker on Football Focus

Piers Morgan has joked he's going to start a new job on Football Focus after his former breakfast telly rival Dan Walker quit as host of the show.

The ex Good Morning Britain star has long waged war on Dan as the presenter of BBC Breakfast.

Today, Dan announced he's stepping down from his other job as the host of BBC sport show Football Focus and Piers was quick to offer to replace him.

In response to Dan's announcement, Piers simply replied: "I start Saturday."

Piers is currently without a regular TV gig after quitting GMB last month in a row over his coverage of Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Dan confirmed today he's stepping down from his job on Football Focus after 12 years on air.

He made the announcement on Twitter, insisting that although he's leaving the show he won't be "disappearing" from TV.

The telly star said: "I have some news, this is going to be my last season presenting Football Focus.

"It's been a real pleasure and amazing 12 years and I can honestly say I've loved every single second of it.

"I'm really proud about the job that we've done, the changes we've made to the show and the issues we've looked at and at a time when the football landscape is changing immeasurably."

Dan joined Football Focus back in 2009 and has become one of the show's longest-serving presenters.

"But having said all that after 12 years, it's time for someone else to take the reins."

He will continue on the programme until the end of the current season, which comes to a close on May 22.

Dan will continue to host BBC Breakfast, and will also front a show dedicated to the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
