Piers Morgan invites Donald Trump on to Good Morning Britain during UK state visit for 'sheer annoyance'

Piers Morgan has invited President Donald Trump to join him on the Good Morning Britain sofa when he arrives in London for his state visit later this year.

The US politician will make a three-day state visit to the UK from 3 to 5 June which will see him meet with the Queen and attend talks with the prime minister at Downing Street.

Morgan wants to schedule in a chat on the ITV breakfast show for the “sheer annoyance” it would cause some viewers.

“I’ve had him four times on the show since he first ran for President,” he told reporters at the BAFTA TV Awards. “He’s coming to London in a few weeks. I could probably get him out of bed early. President Trump on the sofa would be [perfect].”

Asked why he is so keen on Mr Trump making an appearance, he said: “For the sheer annoyance factor to everybody else in the British media it would be very satisfying.”

Morgan previously interviewed Mr Trump on board his aeroplane, Air Force One.

Morgan defended himself against critics, saying he works to instill debate on Good Morning Britain in a bid to dispel “hysteria”.

“The job of the media today is to cut through the fake news, the disinformation, and get to the truth,” he said.

“I just try and, with Brexit and Trump in particular, just not join the hysteria on either side, because the hysteria is sending people nuts.

“We’ve become a very weird society. We used to be a great nation of debaters: go and have a drink, settle our differences.”

Morgan was left bitter after Good Morning Britain failed to win an award at Sunday night’s bash, despite being up for two in the News Coverage category. The win went to Channel 4 for Cambridge Analytica Uncovered.

Morgan branded the BBC “churlish” and “pathetic” for not even mentioning their category during the two hour broadcast on Sunday night.

“Utterly churlish, pathetic and spineless by the BBC – and I’m on to you,” he said. “I will be pumping out the fact we got nominations for the rest of the year till you all get sick of it.”

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
