Piers Morgan 'identifies as Sam Smith' as he mocks singer for revealing he is non-binary

Piers Morgan has revealed he will now identify as Sam Smith in a bid to claim the singer’s royalties.

Morgan, 53, criticised Smith after he revealed he is non-binary after feeling he neither identifies with either male or female gender.

“Sam Smith has announced he’s gender fluid – he can’t work out if he’s male or female,” Morgan said as he discussed the singer’s comments on Good Morning Britain.

“I’m now identifying as Sam Smith so I can get his royalties. It works both ways.”

Susanna Reid asked: “Why do you care?”

Claiming it is a “generational thing” he said: “He has millions of fans. What are they supposed to think? I think there are so many ramifications around self-identity which actually are a real concern and they haven’t really thought it through.”

Smith, 26, said he sees himself as his “own special creation” as he opened up about how he identifies during a chat with Jameela Jamil’s Instagram project I Weigh.

“You are just you. You are a mixture of all different things. You’re your own special creation. That’s how I take it,” he said.

“I’m not male or female, I think I float somewhere in between. It’s all on a spectrum. I think the same with sexuality.”

He revealed that when he first heard and researched terms including “non-binary” and “genderqueer”, he “read into it and thought ‘f*** that is me’”.

Morgan previously branded a “bigot” during a gender fluidity debate with Munroe Bergdorf in which he announced he would no longer respond to his own name, instead claiming he would identify as Brad Pitt.

He later clarified his decision on Twitter, posting: “I am today identifying as Brad Pitt & will be very offended if anyone refuses to respect this.”

Earlier this year he decided to identify as a “hippopotamus” while criticising actress Alyssa Milano who claimed she identified as trans, gay, disabled and an immigrant on Twitter.
