Piers Morgan hits out BBC Sports Personality of the Year after slamming Strictly final

Piers Morgan has hit out at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021 - 24 hours after slamming the Strictly Come Dancing final.

The former Good Morning Britain host shared his opinions on two of the biggest events which took place over the weekend.

Starting with SPOTY, Piers was unhappy that England were named team of the year.

Gareth Southgate also won the coach of the year award after steering the men's football team to their first major final in 55 years at Euro 2020 in the summer.

Hitting out on Sunday night after the news was announced, Piers tweeted: "The #SPOTY Team of the Year award going to a team that didn’t win anything perfectly epitomises the absurd new fad of celebrating sporting losers.

"There’s more kudos/silverware to be had in failing or quitting than actually coming first."

On Saturday night, Piers took a swipe at the Strictly final as the competition came to an end after 13 weeks.

The glitzy dance contest saw Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice face John Whaite and Johannes Radebe in a bid to get their hands on the Glitterball trophy.

Either couple would have made Strictly history by being crowned the 2021 winners with Rose being the first deaf contestant to ever appear on the show and John and Johannes being the first all-male pairing.

But it was EastEnders star Rose and pro partner Giovanni who were announced as this year's champions.

The emotional episode, however, didn't get Pier's vote.

He tweeted: "Tuned into #Strictly for the first time in years and everyone’s crying because everyone’s so perfect. Sorry, but [vomit face emoji]"

And the TV presenter and journalist quickly got the wrath of Strictly fans.

@Anfieldmandy said: "Perhaps if you had paid a bit more attention you will see how the programme has educated people on disability and sexuality isn’t it nice in these troubled times to actually have something that is so beautiful!"

"Piers, that's on you. If you watched from the start of the series, you'd understand," @Jayke1981 replied.

@kazzitmason added: "Well I do agree with some things you tweet, but definitely not this, you really should have watched it from the beginning then you would understand why it’s been emotional. It’s given us so much happiness in this s****y bloody time!!"
