Piers Morgan hits out BBC Sports Personality of the Year after 'losers' England won team prize

Piers Morgan has hit out at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021 after 'losers' England were named the Team of the year.

The England team managed to get into the final of Euro 2020 but lost to Italy – and although their achievements were celebrated during Sunday’s bash, Piers admitted he was not impressed.

Piers wrote: "The #SPOTY Team of the Year award going to a team that didn't win anything perfectly epitomises the absurd new fad of celebrating sporting losers.

"There’s more kudos/silverware to be had in failing or quitting than actually coming first."

Piers who has never been short of comment, also said he was unimpressed by the emotional Strictly final - leaving a vomit emoji on his Twitter account to express his thoughts.

During the BBC Sports Person of The Year event England manager Gareth Southgate said of the England victory: "I think what appealed to people was that this team, from the youngest to the oldest, from those that played every minute to those that didn’t play any minutes, they really pulled together through the whole summer.

Gareth Southgate was interviewed on stage during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2021 (PA)

"I think they represented the country brilliantly on and off the pitch."

Other winners on the night included Scotland and Arsenal defender Jen Beattie who received the Helen Rollason Award, which recognises outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.

Tennis star 19-year-old Emma Raducanu took home the big prize after winning the US Open and becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977. Olympic swimmer Tom Daley and Adam Peaty, who won two golds in Tokyo were also celebrated.

And Tyson Fury, Raheem Sterling and Dame Sarah Storey were nominated for the award.
