Piers Morgan forced off Good Morning Britain as he awaits coronavirus test results

Piers Morgan has said that he won't be appearing on Good Morning Britain as he awaits the results of a coronavirus test.

The ITV host told his Twitter followers on Sunday night that he had been feeling unwell over the weekend and will stay off the programme 'out of an abundance of caution'.

Piers has continued to appear on GMB alongside co-host Susanna Reid since the lockdown began.

Writing to his 7.4m followers, the 55-year-old said: "UPDATE: On medical advice, and out of an abundance of caution for a mild symptom that arose in past 48hrs, I've had a test for COVID-19 and so won't be working on @GMB until I get the result back, which should be tomorrow."

The controversial presenter has been key to the programme in recent weeks as the show continues to air despite other shows having to be halted.

Piers has, however, attracted thousands of complaints from viewers over his interview style of goverment ministers on the coronavirus crisis.

Despite the complaints, broadcasting watchdog Ofcom cleared him of any wrong-doing saying that he is "well-known for his combative interviewing style" and viewers would expect him to challenge senior politicians.

They also said that his guests were "given adequate opportunity to put their points across and counter the presenter's criticisms".

Good Morning Britains airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
