Piers Morgan doubles down on Meghan Markle comments as he opens up on Good Morning Britain exit

Piers Morgan has doubled down on his Meghan Markle comments as he opened up for the first time since his dramatic exit from Good Morning Britain.

The 55-year-old suggested that he did not believe the Duchess of Sussex when she spoke about her mental health struggles during her time in the Royal Family.

GMB was hit with tens of thousands of Ofcom complaints and was slammed by viewers and mental health charities for his ‘damaging comments’.

Morgan was also confronted by former GMB co-star Alex Beresford over the comments in what turned out to be his final show yesterday.

The journalist used the ‘freedom of speech’ defence to reiterate his comments as he spoke about the news of exit for the first time on Twitter today.

He wrote: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK.

“Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.

“Thanks for all the love and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

Viewers were left furious with Morgan after he went on tirade about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ‘bombshell’ interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in Scotland on Monday this week.

He called the programme a ‘two hour trashathon’ and said he was sickened by it.

The controversial presenter particularly came under the microscope when he cast doubt over Meghan Markle’s suicidal thoughts.

Broadcast watchdog Ofcom said that it has received more than 41,000 complaints from across the UK.

A number of mental health charities hit hack at Morgan following the comments.

Scottish mental health charity SAMH said: “Anyone who shares their experience of suicidal thoughts and mental ill health should be treated with compassion and empathy.

“We were, therefore, deeply concerned about damaging comments made by Piers Morgan yesterday in response to the interview with Meghan and Harry.

“Along with charity partners we have shared our concern with ITV.”

Morgan angrily stormed off set on yesterday’s Good Morning Britain after he was confronted by weatherman Alex Beresford, who condemned him for ‘trashing’ Meghan.

It later emerged that Morgan had quit the show with immediate effect last night.
