Piers Morgan defends himself after revealing he flew to Antigua for Christmas

Piers Morgan has defended himself after admitting he flew to Antigua for Christmas.

The Good Morning Britain host, 55, has been highly critical of the government's lockdown rules, insisting that they don't go far enough to halt the spread of coronavirus.

But Piers has confessed that he spent Christmas on the Caribbean island, while insisting that it was perfectly within the rules to do so.

Right-wing political site Guido Fawkes' Twitter account had criticised his actions, posting: "Government advice in December was not to travel unless it was essential.

"Piers was publicly calling for Christmas to be cancelled and tougher restrictions.

"He flew to Antigua first class on Virgin before Christmas Day."

Piers then quote-tweeted the post on Sunday afternoon to defend himself.

He wrote: "Hi Guido, Happy New Year. 1) The Govt said travel abroad from Tier 3 was allowed if people went straight to the airport.

"2) I didn't call for Christmas to be cancelled.

"3) I haven't flown on Virgin for a year.

"4) I last flew First Class in February. Otherwise, spot on!"

Back in November Piers called for people to celebrate Christmas in a much more stripped-back way.

In November Piers Morgan tweeted that everyone will have to 'make compromises' over the festive season because of coronavirus (piersmorgan/Twitter)

He tweeted: "Covid-19 doesn’t give a flying f*ck about Christmas. If we have to make compromises this year, so be it.

"We can still attend virtual church services, & still have virtual meals with all the trimmings.

"The vaccines are coming fast, let's save as many lives as possible until then."
