Piers Morgan defends Gemma Collins after exposing vile abuse on GMB

Piers Morgan has hit out at vile abuse he received aimed at Gemma Collins.

The Good Morning Britain host explained on Monday's show how he announced that reality star Gemma would be the first guest on his new Life Stories series.

The show, which airs on ITV on Thursday, will see the former TOWIE star discuss her rise to fame with tears and laughter all thrown in.

But Piers was forced to leap to Gemma's defence as they called out Internet trolls in a GMB debate.

Piers started: "Whether you do or not nobody should have to put up with people on Twitter spewing the kind of death threats and vile abuse they have been spewing at Gemma Collins and the moment I confirmed it, the moment I announced it, the moment it started.

"People sending death threats - saying, 'I hope you die'..."

A shocked Susanna replied: "What?"

Piers continued: "Literally, yes. I was reading the stuff. It's more than what is wrong with people, it is a malevolent thing in our society now.

"And there is no regulation. If a newspaper did that or if we did that today - if we spent the next five minutes wishing people dead - we would be taken off air.

"Literally, we would be taken off air and pulled. Ofcom would intervene and we would be taken off air but nothing happens on Twitter.

"These morons abuse these footballers, even Captain Tom - even Captain Tom got it! - and, yes, maybe more divisive figures like Gemma Collins alright, a more divisive, polarising figure but she shouldn't have to have people wishing her dead on a public platform with no repercussions for people that do that.

"What do we do about these people who are little eggheads or smiley faces these days, or accountants with five or six numbers after their names? Who's organising this because it is orchestrated? Who are the bosses behind this?"

Susanna was also shocked by what she heard (ITV)

"This kind of 'I want you dead' stuff has no place in public discourse."

They also showed a clip from Life Stories which showed Gemma crying after discussing her being a target for abuse online.

It featured former Towie co-star Joey Essex detailing the online abuse she's received throughout her career to which Gemma said she is a "stronger" person now.
