Piers Morgan confirms his future plans as he thanks his fans

Piers Morgan has confirmed he won't be returning to Good Morning Britain, despite hundreds of thousands of people signing a petition demanding he is reinstated.

Mr Morgan left the ITV morning show on Tuesday night, hours after Ofcom said they were launching an investigation following his comments about Meghan Markle.

ITV confirmed Mr Morgan's departure in a statement and said: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

Following his departure thousands of people signed a petition wanting him to return to ITV.

Today Mr Morgan took to twitter to share a story about the petition and he clarified his future plans.

He said: "I won’t be going back, but thanks to everyone who has signed these petitions.

"Normally, people start petitions to have me fired or deported, so this is a pleasant surprise."

There are rumours Mr Morgan may be considering a move to Andrew Neil's network GB News and yesterday Mr Neil said he would be "delighted" to speak to Piers Morgan about a possible move.

Mr Neil said: "Piers would be a huge asset to GB News and we'll definitely look at that... we haven't started any negotiations yet but we would certainly be delighted to talk to him if he's up for it."

Asked whether Morgan would be allowed to repeat the kind of behaviour that prompted his exit from Good Morning Britain, he added: "You'll understand I wouldn't want to negotiate with Piers Morgan on the airwaves of the BBC.

"All I would say is I wouldn't really want to simply transfer what he did at GMB onto GB News. But could we find a role for Piers Morgan? Of course we could. Any network worth its salt could find a role for a broadcaster of his calibre."
