Piers Morgan cleared by Ofcom after nearly 1,000 complaints about his GMB gender identity comments

Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan will not be investigated by Ofcom after 950 complaints were made for his on-air rant and controversial remarks on gender identity.

The outspoken TV presenter triggered the complaints to the TV watchdog after he told GMB viewers that he identified as a "two-spirit penguin".

The 54-year-old made the comment during a live debate on the breakfast show in relation to a BBC film that claims there are more than 100 genders.

In response to an article about a London Aquarium penguin being cared for by a lesbian penguin couple and being raised as gender neutral, Piers said that he is now going to identify himself as a penguin.

He added: "I demand to be allowed into the penguin enclosure at the aquarium and live with the penguins.”

Many viewers were unhappy with his comments, leading to Ofcom receiving 950 complaints from people - many of whom classed his opinions as "transgender discrimination" and "offensive".

However, the TV regulator has now confirmed in a report published earlier this week that the show "did not raise issues warranting investigation" and that Piers Morgan "has a right to express his views".

While discussing the complaints and Ofcom's statement with his co-host Susanna Reid, Piers read out that it was "one of the highest number of complaints of any TV show in the country this year."

He then followed up by saying: "Which I'm quite personally pleased about."

Susanna was quick to snap back to his remark, saying: "I know, you wear that as a badge of honour."

But in a surprising twist, the news presenters revealed that although Piers had been cleared, the Ofcom ruling actually put Susanna in the firing line.

Piers quipped: "Oh yeah, what's quite cool is the Ofcom ruling - which is quite a good ruling I must say - so nearly 1,000 people complained and they all want me fired.

"But the only person singled out for complaint is actually not me, it's Susanna," he laughed.

Piers added: "I'm completely clear for having strongly held views on gender identity and I have a right to express those views - thank you Ofcom.

"We also understand GMB's audience has clear expectation around his provocative position on this issue."

"Basically you asked for him, you got him!" Susanna interupted.

"You can't get rid of me" Piers brags on GMB as online poll helped him "to get a pay rise"

The opinionated breakfast host then went on to share why Susanna was singled out by the TV regulator, revealing that she didn't challenge him enough.

Quoting Ofcom's statement, Piers said: "There was a lack of challenge from his co-presenter."

"So she's the real villain here," he joked.

"I'm in the clear, but 'old halo girl' she gets knifed."

Around the time of the on-air debate, a petition was created on Change.org to have Piers removed from the show.

But his fans were quick to support him and a rival petition was created for him to stay due to his "common sense approach to life" went viral and gained more votes.
