Piers Morgan clashes with Alastair Campbell over celebrity 'mental health campaigners'

Piers Morgan may have said he was taking a step back from Twitter but he appears to have clashed Alastair Campbell on the social media site.

The former Good Morning Britain host and the ITV show's latest presenter had an exchange on Tuesday morning over celebrity 'mental health campaigners'.

Piers, 56, took to Twitter and ranted about their "preaching".

He wrote: "I'm curious to know just how much money famous 'mental health campaigner’ are making from constantly preaching about it & exploiting their myriad 'problems' - and what percentage of that money they give to mental health charities.

"Celebrity victimhood is a lucrative business."

But the post came to Alastair's attention and he hot back with a lengthy response.

"‘If you mean me – and I have a charity account which takes a share of my earnings, which go to causes we believe in, mainly mental health and education for poorer children. I do paid speaking gigs and often ask for fees to be paid to charity," the writer and campaigner responded.

"I have made money from books and documentaries about mental health, (I do have to make a living) and in all cases some of the proceeds go to charity.

"I am an ambassador for @mind_@Rethink_a patron of @MaytreeRespite and Global Ambassador for Australians for Mental Health.

"I'm also involved with MH charities in Ireland + Scotland. I have sometimes been paid to advise organisations on mental health in the workplace and again always will make donation to sector organisation. In my running days I raised over £1m for @bloodcancer_uk."

He ended his thread: "If you’d like to hear more about this work @schooltruth and I will be talking to @kayburley tonight 7pm about our book Living Better on the back of which Fiona has set up an online support group for partners and families of depressives. Go to Blackwell’s site for tickets."

But Piers didn't put too much thought into his reply, saying: "No, I was talking about celebrities.."

While Alistair responded with: "Ah ok," Piers' followers had a lot to say about his savage put down.

"Savage. He'll be a celeb after this week replacing you," one said.

Another commented: "Monumental reply and for me to say that to you Piers is in itself monumental."

"Harsh Piers," a third added as a fourth hit back "At least @campbellclaret is on GMB."
