Piers Morgan challenges vaccine minister over school meals after viral Matt Hancock clash

Nadhim Zahawi, the Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment, was grilled on Good Morning Britain on Monday over the free school meals issue.

Piers Morgan put him on the spot, as he asked Mr Zahawi to confess whether or not he regretted voting against extending free school meals amid the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown.

The government initially voted against extending the meals for those who needed them, before a campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford led to the huge U-turn in October 2020.

Last week, Piers called out Hancock on GMB as he repeatedly swerved his question on whether he regretted initially voting against it.

As he asked why he did and why they changed their mind, Hancock simply kept replying that he was glad the change was made - but refused to say whether he was wrong in the first place.

As Zahawi appeared on the show on Monday, Piers quickly brought up the discussion and the clip of Hancock on the show that has since gone viral.

Piers asked him whether he regretted voting against it, after he too voted against extending free school meals.

Zahawi appeared to become flustered and began changing the topic, but Piers kept bringing the conversation back to the topic in hand - wanting an answer.

Eventually, Zahawi confessed "in hindsight" you want to make the right choice - as he told Piers he was "absolutely right" and appeared to admit he would vote differently next time.

Piers asked "what was so hard" about admitting that, referring to Hancock's comments.

But Zahawi defended Hancock over his appearance on the show, hitting back at the host by saying: "Matt Hancock has done thousands of hours of interviews.

"Piers he's done thousands of hours of interviews, since March he's been working seven days a week, 19 hour days, managing a pandemic that every country is struggling with."

Piers repeated his claims that if Hancock had just admitted he had changed his view and would vote differently going forward, he would be respected more.

Earlier on in the show, he said Hancock would have looked better in the clip if he had "owned" his mistake.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
